02/01/2009 was my 6th year wedding anniversary. While searching for a place to take my wife out on this day, I was seeking a place where we can spend the afternoon together talking and just enjoying each other's company...a luxury we couldn't indulge for the last ...oh, God... about 3 years. My co-worker Reggie hooked me up with this nice place that many SoCal residents don't seem to know about. The Balboa island.
The weather was perfect on this sunday. We got home around 1pm after church service, then put both kids to nap and headed out before 2. Thanks to my mom who gladly said "go ahead and have a good time." Finally, it was just two of us!!!
Took 5FWY down to New Port Beach and took the ferry. It was pretty interesting ride. The ferry carries 3 cars at a time and make frequent trips all day long. Their website says it's run by 3 brothers now and their father, Mr. Beeks, started this business back in 1919. While we were enjoying the beautiful view of the Balboa island and the ocean, the ferry traveled from the Balboa island to the Balboa peninsula in about 5 min (0.25 miles).
Then, we drove to the Balboa Jetty park, park the car there in the street, and strolled down the beach and just talked for awhile. Something we needed to do for a long time. It was the Superbowl Sunday so there weren't many people out at the park, which was even better for us :)
Then, we headed to the Newport Landing restaurant.
Again, Reggie highly recommended this place asked that we get a table on the 2nd level. So we did. It was beautiful. Had a great ocean view toward the Balboa island and the main land. The server turned on the small heater since it was around 5pm and getting a little cold. Yes, let's talk about how the dinner was. Both the clam chowder and the house salad with raspberry vinaigrette were superb, as well as the calamari sticks we ordered as appetizer. For dinner my wife ordered Opakapaka, which is a piece of white fish covered with Macadamia Nut and served with Chunky Mango Salsa and Coconut Rice. I ordered Potato wrapped salmon. The presentation was beautifully done on both and they tasted umm~umm~ so good I was thinking to myself 'I am so coming back to this place'.
How did she like it? Well, she said "Today was the best anniversay ever". Let's just leave it at that! (and yes, I forgot to take the camera. Doh!)
